Metal Spinning Products
Metal fabrication has been developing with the advancement in technology with most companies resorting to modern technology such as the CNC metal spinning. The modern hydraulic and electric motors allow manufacturers not only to spin soft metals, but also harder metal such as stainless steel, copper, brass, aluminum etc. Moreover, it’s possible to produce items with complex shapes at cheaper prices. This involves series of processes where rigid rollers and tools are used to form a blank metal at various stages until a desired geometrical shape is obtained. A large number of products such as lampshades, funnels, trash bins, bells, cans, cylinders, flowerpots, cookware, gas cylinders etc. can be produced through metal spinning. In fact, over 60% of metal spinning products are used in both home and industrial applications.
Here are some end products of metal spinning
Through CNC machining, it is possible to decorate some of the metal spinning products as evident in the images above. The decorations such as grooves in most stainless steel spun materials can be obtained accurately and precisely. Most CNC machines can achieve high degree of repeatability making several products to be produced each time. With CNC machines, a pre-programmed series of operations are carefully coded, fed to the systems and the machine executes these operations automatically. In fact, with this automation, as long as the final product doesn’t require any further tooling, the turnaround period can be very short.
Despite all these, there are certain limitations which most metal spinning companies do experience and these include:
Size and shape; generally, in metal spinning process; whether the traditional or the modern spinning processes, there is a limitation in both size and shape. With this process, it’s easier to obtain concentric and axially symmetrical shapes. Mostly, it is easier to spin shapes such as dished heads, stepped parts, parabolas, funnels, cones and hemispheres. The diameter of components which are produced is also limited. Furthermore, creating irregular shapes is also nightmare through this process. This implies that not all products can be obtained through this this process.
Production constrains; rollers and spoons are some of the most commonly used tools in the general production of metal spinning products. However, in customized productions, the manufacturers must design specific tool components to suit the desired application. This may include designing a new mandrel. From an economic point of view, it will be futile to design all these tools and equipment to produce low volume of products. This implies, for customized productions, only high volume of products can be produced.
Errors; like any other forming processes, metal spinning process is also associated with some errors. In this process, when a dent or a crack occurs during production; it is irreplaceable. This is a similar scenario when the blank happens to have some minor damages or irregularities. In all practical cases, repairing these could be expensive. In addition to this, when a metal happens to undergo undesirable hardening, it must be taken through heat treatment before proceeding with the spinning process. Generally, metal spinning play a significant role in metal forming process just like other forms of metal forming procedures.
